Birthday Party

Ezra invited some of his closest friends over for the official 1 year birthday celebration on Sunday afternoon. The event was held at his grandparents house in Castle Rock, and the weather held out just fine for the whole party (even though there were 5 tornados that hit the ground in the Denver metro area, including one that prevented someone from coming to the party when it hit his building and the one next to his). Partygoers enjoyed beer, veggie burgers, and cake while Ezra enjoyed the partygoers. Thanks everyone for coming, and thanks everyone for all of your well wishes, thoughts, gifts, and calls.

1 Year Dr. Appointment

Ezra had his 12 month visit with Dr. Sheehan this afternoon, and everything looks perfect! She was really happy with his growth, both mentally and physically. He did get one shot, the second of the polio series….and as has become the norm, cried for about 10 seconds, then went back to smiling. He did a lot better at this visit than the previous two: no crying (other than after the shot), and he sat nearly perfectly still for all of the exam…we figured that this was somewhere between his 9th and 11th visit to the doctor this year, so he should be getting good at it.

Stats. Head: 18″ (35%). Height: 30.75″ (75%). Weight: 21lbs 7oz (35%)

Ezra’s First Year Video Slideshow

Here is a little slideshow of Ezra’s year…it is in two parts because You Tube won’t let me upload something that is more than 10 minutes. The video is 16 minutes total. Enjoy!

12 Months!

It’s strange how everything that we will do now is for the second time with Ezra. This past year has been one full of the highest of highs, and sprinkled with the lowest of lows. Personally, I am surprised at the emotion that has come with looking and thinking back at the last year…I suppose that’s nostalgia – even if for the short period of time. Ahna and I have done our very best to make sure that we are cherishing every moment, every cry, every smile, every new step; but it all still seems to be flying by. Ezra has become an amazing boy – so much fun to have around…we can’t wait to see what the next 12 months hold!

I am not actually awake at the time that this post goes live, but I set it to hit the blog at 3:13am – to mark the exact moment that Ezra was born last June. There are so many emotions tied to this moment that I don’t think either of us expected to feel, and we will probably try to address some of them during a later post; but for now…the picture with Ahna is the first picture of Ezra ever taken, and the one with me is just a few minutes later.

Views From An Old Phone

As we made the switch to the new phones, I pulled off some photos from the old phone that were trapped in the digi-camera-phone world.

A Dinner Party

Ezra hosted a little dinner party for his friend, Sydney, on Friday night. If my ever-fading memory serves me correctly (luckily, I don’t have to go back too far) this might have been his first hosting event of someone his age. Sydney, of course, brought along some family – otherwise known as parents – for Ahna and I to converse with while the two of them played the evening away.

Early Birthday Party, Take 2

Ezra had the opportunity to celebrate his birthday with the Family Dinner crowd on Thursday night. It was our turn to host, so we decided to have a little private celebration with Tori, Mary, Jennifer, and Charlotte (Hafner wasn’t able to make it due to work, but plans are in the works for something this upcoming week with her). Ezra was serenaded to Happy Birthday, while the lit cupcake was brought out…and he had this priceless look of confusion and awe on his face (see big picture below). He enjoyed some of the frosting – which we promptly took away since it was bedtime, and then opened up some great gifts. Books, a cd, and some finger puppets….lots of fun to be had.

A Computer Geek

Yes, it appears that Ezra is taking after his Mom Dad in his never ending hunt to live in front of a computer. It’s hard to believe that when we grew up, it was the Apple 2E+, then eventually a mouse was added, then eventually….well, you know. Now, at 11 months, Ezra already knows to go to the computer, grab the mouse, and look for the little thing moving on the screen. I suppose it’s only a matter of time before he takes over the blog.

Indoctrination (Updated)

Well, you can turn another page in the “Been There, Done That” book of parenting. 3 sets of PJs for each Ezra and Ahna, two shirts for me, one set of sheets, half a roll of toilet paper, and one towel (all amounts qualified as ‘so far’) add up to a child that decided that the outside was better for the food than the inside. We aren’t exactly sure what has caused this to happen – since it is the first time (not including spit up) and the CSI hasn’t arrived as of yet – but we are getting a rare glimpse into exactly how much Ezra chews his food. Answer: when it comes to veggie burgers, not much. We were once again reminded of two things: 1) the stomach is acutely aware of the time of day, since it only and always decides to have episodes like this during the nighttime hours; and 2) somewhat surprisingly, vomit smells the same in an infant and an adult.

I am reminded of a scene from an old Nick cartoon where one of the characters farts for the first time…his verbal response was: “something just came out of my butt.” Ezra was sporting a similar expression as he was standing over the toilet. He seems to be acting okay for the most part, other than having no idea what is happening. He is trying to fall asleep between sessions, and even cracked a smile or two. This is being written as the clock shows near-midnight….here’s to hoping the worst is over.

Updated 0544: the worst was not over, and I suppose that it still may not be. As far as throwing up goes, once he empties his stomach, he was able to fall asleep for an hour or so at a time, but as soon as we tried to give him some fluids….up it came. More outfits gone through for Ahna and I, Ezra slept in diapers only. All of this should make for an interesting day.
