Baby Countdown: T-Minus 6 Days

The bag is packed and ready to go. Almost. Just missing a few clothing items to get us through the delivery, but we’ll get those in there ASAP. There might be some things in there that you might not have seen in other bags, but when you combine Hypnobirthing practices and the experience of a prior 36-hour labor, you get a back that has granola bars, peanuts, crackers, construction paper (for covering the clock), a music player, toiletries, snack items for Ezra, and clothes for us. Chances are that we won’t touch a lot of it (unless we have another extended labor), but it’s good to have available.

Ah, and one random picture of Ezra from this morning.

30 Months!

2.5 years?! Wow.

Prayer At Your Service

Each night prior to our meal, we hold hands and say a short prayer about whatever needs praying. For the past several months, Ezra has been not only disinterested, but flat out mad when we do it; at times pointing to us and saying “no praying!” We persevere through the childish scolding and pray each night, extending an open hand in his direction passively hoping that one time he will want to join back in.

Last night was that night. We started our meal off in the same fashion that the past several months have come to be – including the prayer protests. But halfway through the meal, and completely unprompted and unprovoked, Ezra reached out each of his hands and told us that he would like to pray. Ahna and I looked at each other with a certain sense of happiness that it’s possible he might be loosing his distaste and falling on the side of wanting to pray again. Many months ago, when he was still excited/interested in the pre-meal prayer, he would even ask to do it in the middle of the meal at random times…we always obliged. So when he asked last night, I thought it to be no different that any of those times from before.

But this time was different. Before either Ahna or I could say anything outloud, Ezra says “Gracious God, thank you for Saba and Savta, Nana and Papa. Mommy and Daddy and Baby and Ezra. Amen.” Those last two were with a little prompting. WOW! It was stunning. For him to be not only interested in a prayer again, but to lead the prayer with his own words and thoughts was an amazing thing to watch. It was just one of those moments in parenting that makes everything okay. We were so proud of Ezra on so many levels – and it might have even brought a tear to one of our eyes, but I’m not going to spill who it was (hint: the person’s name rhymes with Ahna).

Dance, Dance, Dance

The three (+1) of us, along with a few friends, hit the concert circuit for the first time together…heading to a special family show put on by Michael Franti and Spearhead. It was a mid-afternoon affair that featured a puppet show, a 9-year-old girl from Denver covering the Flobots and the Beatles, and Franti and gang singing some great dancing songs. Unfortunately, the pre-Franti stuff took a lot longer than we anticipated so we had to leave the show after only a few songs because we had a dinner commitment.

The show was scheduled at the exact same time as Ezra’s nap normally occurs, so we were anticipating some difficulties with the sleep schedule. While Ezra did have some trouble with being tired, he really did a great job. And when there was good music playing, he was dancing all around. You just can’t stop him from showing off his moves to the world – security be damned (he kept encroaching on the hula hoop area). It was really fun to have Ezra at a concert with us, and has left us anticipating our next good opportunity.

Walking, Walking, Walking

During a visit to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, we found an exhibit there all about the body and health…and while the entire exhibit was really quite interesting (including a VERY disturbing aging computer), by far the most fun part for Ezra was the walking/running analyzer. Since there were only a few people in the place while we were there, Ezra was able to run through it three times in a row – with his results displayed for the world to see – and a bad camera phone to try to capture.

Winter’s First Showing

It came really late this year (average first snowfall is Oct 19), but it’s better late than never. One day, we had 70 degrees and sunny….the next brought temps in the 30’s and snow. The trace-2 inches that the esteemed forecasters called for materialized as 6 inches on the grass. Ezra and I took the opportunity to head outside and play around a little – and ever since we bought his snow shovel a couple of weeks ago, every time I mentioned the snow he immediately responded with a request to go outside and use it. Well, his chance finally presented itself and he took full advantage; coming in after about 30 minutes soaking wet and freezing cold. As winter does around here (shows up out of nowhere to stay) we have snow in the forecast for 2 more time this week. Here’s to a long and fun snow season!

29 Months!

The Train Driver

Halloween 2010 was a three day event for us….starting on Friday with a downtown Castle Rock event and concluding on Sunday night with Ezra running from door-to-door with reckless abandon trying to get that next piece of candy (although he actually doesn’t care too much about eating the candy, just obtaining it).

The Friday evening event was so-so. The so-good part was that there was something to do downtown that was kid-oriented and family fun. The so-bad part was that there was about 10 times too many kids walking on a pretty small sidewalk from shop to shop. The so-great part was that Nana was in town to visit and Ezra got his first candy collection with her by his side. It was Ezra’s first time really seeing anyone dressed up in costume (that he can remember), so when he first saw Buzz Lightyear and Woody walking around the park, he stood in shocked disbelief for 2 minutes. I think that he was just starting to get the hang of it all by the end of our time downtown, but he still would turn and stare whenever a character that he recognized would run past.

On Sunday night, Saba and Savta came over for some dinner and to hang out while we strolled around the neighborhood. Right at dusk, we headed out and knocked on our neighbor’s doors – and it took Ezra all of two doors to get the gist of what to do: “Trick-or-treat. Thank You.” Next home. He had a blast running around with some friends from the street and made sure to take account of how much candy he had gotten after each home.

When we returned home for the night, every time the doorbell rang Ezra would go running to answer it, ask the kids what they were dressed up as, and give each of them a single piece of candy…and occasionally sneak one into his pumpkin.

Ezra Gets A Big Boy Bed

Well, it’s all happening. The kid is growing up right before our eyes. Yesterday we went and bought a new bed and dresser for Ezra, and a new rocker chair for us (for the new baby). Today we assembled the bed and dresser…and disassembled the crib and old dresser and moved them to the new baby’s room. Things are taking a much different shape in both of those rooms as change is upon us.

It is a little emotional to think that Ezra has spent his last night in a crib, and equally exciting to think about what tonight will bring. Ezra is super excited about the new bed, and spent a long while this afternoon hanging out in the bed reading and introducing his stuffed animals to the new space. Fingers crossed about tonight – but I have a good feeling.

Monkey Business

We have posted before about trips to Monkey Bizness, so I won’t bore everyone with all of the details of the playing (although Ezra has gotten into the habit of playing by himself and then checking in with us with a far away wave to let us know that everything is alright). To some of the photos of Ezra painting:
