A Family Day

Seems like those are more and more rare. I don’t know if it is due to the new schedule or some other cosmic twist, but Sunday sure felt like it hadn’t happened in a long time. The three of us hit the grocery store in the mid-morning, and then in the afternoon we headed out to Castlewood Canyon State Park…about 7 miles from our house…for a nice hike.

It’s been abnormally warm this past week (and will continue this upcoming week, along with being really dry), and since I don’t know how much you understand about the problems with the environment, we’ll keep this short and simple: It aint supposed to be like that. That said, we will not sit indoors and mope about it….the hike was really nice, and we enjoyed using the backpack  (which we weren’t able to use last summer).

Random Pictures From Last Week

Two photos are via the camera phone during a walk that Ezra and I did last week around the neighborhood. One of them is from the perspective of someone pushing Ezra, to show you how he loves to ride around lounging with his foot up. I knew that as soon as I walked around the stroller he would take it down, thus the angle. I would suggest that he rides with one or both feet up like that 80% of the time or more. It’s hilarious.

The other photo is from when the three of us went up and visited with Joe, Alissa, and Barrett. It was Ahna’s first time being able to meet Barrett, and even though Ezra met him a few days prior, it was his first chance to really say hi to his future ski buddy.

Bath Fun

It’s been a while since we took some bathtime photos…so here’s some from Thursday night. He loves being in the water, and goes crazy when he hears the bathtub warming up for his arrival. He also really enjoys getting the water dumped over his head, even though it might surprise him from time to time (see picture below). Also, I included a photo – even though it’s a little blurry – where you can see both of his teeth.

Doctor Visit

Ezra had his 9 month doctor appointment the other day….(!) When we went to the doctor’s office a few weeks ago for his sickness, he was a grumpy (understandably) kid during the visit. When we got there this time, he continued the grumpiness – at least initially. I don’t know if it was from him just waking up from a nap, or if it was a recognition of the place, or a combination of both; but he wasn’t the happiest kid for the nurse that took all of his measurements. When Dr. Sheehan walked in, he was displeased at first, then warmed up as the exam went on…which has a lot to do with the way that Dr. Sheehan was interacting with Ezra.

He checked out great, and Dr. Sheehan was pleased with his progress since the last visit. The 9 month appointment has two shots with it (following the schedule that we are on): the flu shot, and the polio vaccine. After talking with the Doctor, we opted to not get the flu shot since the season is coming to a close. As almost always, when Ezra got the vaccine, he showed about 5 seconds of uncomfortableness and then went back to his perky, content self. It’s wild to think that our next visit to the office will be for his 1 year appointment.

The stats – Height: 29.5″ (85%), Head: 18.25″ (75%), Weight: 20 lbs 8ozs (50%)

Quick Shot

I took Ezra to a meeting at work this morning – I am on the Apparatus Team, and we are in the process of putting together specifications for three new engines and one new ladder truck. For those unfamiliar with the process….it will take the 8 of us on the team about 12 months to complete the project. It’s a lot of work, and Ezra seems interested in helping…kinda….he certainly voiced his opinion in today’s meeting. Anyhow, one of the guys in the meeting took this picture on his camera phone.

Not The SAME

One of our closest friends works at an incredibly unique restaraunt….named SAME Cafe. Mary started working there a few months ago, but it was her good friends (from teaching) that started the place. SAME stands for So All May Eat, and it’s a place with a fabulous philosophy. So fabulous in fact, that NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams featured the SAME Cafe on last night’s program. Watch and visit when you are in Denver.

Photo Phun

So I just got home from work and had the opportunity to upload an attempt at something that I have been experimenting with….star trails. This picture was taken last night at 10:30pm at the fire station….it’s amazing how much light is out there, just from the neighborhood and the city. There were absolutely no lights on outside of the station, and the lights in the apparatus bay were on for only 10 seconds, just to give the effect. It was a 20 minute exposure, 18mm, f22, ISO-1000. This is an early attempt at this type of photo, so I expect to be able to do more with this as the summer progresses, especially if we have the opportunity to get out of the city.

PS – the stars are the Orion constellation, oh, and if you click on the picture, it’s a lot better of an image.

Prune Fun

So as Ezra has gotten more and more interactive, there have been some consequences that we have been surprised to find. In the past, Ezra has been a really good and patient eater when chowing on solid foods….but recently, he has started to play with us more, and has been enjoying playing peak-a-boo; which he does by putting his hands on top of his head. Combine the effort to play with the effort to eat – especially the extra sticky food: prunes – and you get a big ol’ mess…and a good ol’ time.

9 Months!

Well, another month has come and gone….this time it was 3/4 of a year gone by (!). Seems as though everyone is over the sicknesses that have inhabited the house for the past few weeks, and all attitudes are on the rebound. Ezra and I went swimming yesterday morning, and then to visit a new member of the extended family at Swedish Hospital…..our great friends Joe and Alissa welcomed a baby boy on Monday night….Barrett was born around 10:30. It was great to see them and to introduce Ezra to a new play buddy….and future teammate of some sport.

The ominous heat that has held the front range hostage for the better part of this week seems as though it is starting to break: today is supposed to be a cool 70, but Saturday could bring us some snow. Keep your fingers crossed that this summer intrusion is only that, and winter will return…..at least some of us actually like this time of year.

Movie Review: Slumdog Millionaire

Hmm. I suppose that I actually don’t need to do a review of the movie given recent award show events…so instead I will pass on some advice for those that haven’t seen it yet.

Following the Oscar’s, I really had no desire to see this film…everyone that I know loved it, every movie review loved it, every award show loved it…seriously, there was no way that this movie could ever live up to the hype. I was sick of hearing how great it was, I was sick of seeing commercials for it, and I was sick of everyone else having seen it except for us.

So, the other day when Ahna and I took a couple of hours for ourselves and headed to the movies, we went straight for Slumdog. Really, Ahna convinced me that it was worth giving a chance to. But in the between time before the movie, it turns out that I had been so anti-movie, that my expectations had been lowered for the film right back to square one.

We loved it. The writing was good, the acting (especially the younger kids) was great, the direction and cinematography was excellent, and the story line was original and fantastic. It deserved all of the praise and all of the awards. So back to that advice for those that haven’t seen it yet: go see it. You’ll like it…no matter what anyone else tells you.
